Thanks to McGill Medicine, my dear brother, Dr. Robert Fung, MDCM’60, was able to become one of the most successful paediatricians and medical teachers in Hong Kong. Robert was also instrumental in setting up UNICEF for Hong Kong and mainland China and in the process, saving the lives of many children in China. Our parents, Sir Kenneth and Lady Fung, felt so proud of having one of their sons, Robert, being a brilliant graduate of McGill Medicine. It was because of our family’s and the city’s love of my brother, and his dedication to McGill as the Founding President of the McGill Society of Hong Kong, that it became natural for me to become involved in supporting Robert’s alma mater after his death in 2009.
In 2012, our family created two scholarships at McGill in loving memory of Robert. The McGill Alumni Association’s Robert Fung International Award of Distinction recognizes McGill alumni who share Robert’s spirit of service and deep commitment to McGill.
The Dr. Robert H.P. Fung Scholarship is awarded to students entering or enrolled at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. My wife, Nelly, and I are great fans of classical music and theatre, and we have been closely involved in the development of the arts in Hong Kong for many years. We have enjoyed sharing our knowledge of the arts community to advise McGill Music concerning partnerships with top music schools in Asia and to assist in recruiting worthy music students. It has been a joy to meet and offer guidance to McGill Music students who have received the scholarship.
