McGill donors are stepping up to help students in crisis

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit McGill’s campuses, students’ lives were upended. Borders closed, classes moved online, and part-time work evaporated, leaving many in serious financial distress.

The University responded with immediate bursary aid for students and then rallied the community to join in and build on that support through the McGill Student Emergency Support Fund. Over 3,000 donors came together to raise approximately $1.6 million, which translated into help for more than 1,500 students. Over 90 per cent of funds went to their most basic needs: living expenses.

Although the hope is that the worst of COVID-19 has passed, the McGill Student Emergency Support Fund is here to stay. It’s now available for any student in crisis, covering essentials such as food, rent, and books.

“The reality is that many students continue to face challenging circumstances,” says Cara Piperni, director of the Scholarships and Student Aid Office. “Donor support remains critical.”
