McGill is on a quest to secure 200 legacy gifts for its 200th anniversary. Here’s a breakdown of who is joining, what they’re donating, and how you can be counted among them

It’s been nearly a year since McGill launched the 200 for 200 Legacy Challenge, which aims to secure 200 legacy gifts for McGill’s Bicentennial. So far, we’re over halfway to our goal, with more than 130 donors being counted in the Challenge.

But who are they? And how are they leaving their gift? Here’s a statistical breakdown of who’s stepping up to the Challenge, and how they made it happen.

Who are the 200 for 200 Legacy Challenge donors?

80% are McGill alumni
6% are McGill faculty or staff
14% have an alternative McGill connection or are simply treasured McGill donors.

When did our McGill alumni legacy donors graduate?

1940s = 1%
1950s = 6%
1960s = 21%
1970s = 25%
1980s = 28%
1990s = 12%
2000s = 6%
2010s = 1%

Where do donors reside?

68% live in Canada
23% are in the U.S.
9% reside elsewhere

How are they leaving their legacy gift?

87% of donors included McGill in their will.

Additional options include donating retirement plan assets, naming McGill as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy, or creating a Charitable Remainder Trust.

Did you know?

Anyone who’s arranged a legacy gift to McGill – either this year, or in the past – can participate in the Challenge. There is no minimum dollar amount required, and every contribution is deeply appreciated.
