The gift of a McGill education

Edith Louie is both a recipient and a donor

Edith Louie, BEd’96, is a high school mathematics teacher who has devoted over 20 years of her education career to Branksome Hall, an all-girls school in Toronto, Ont. Yet she considers herself, first and foremost, a McGillian.

“McGill is where I grew up,” says Louie. “It’s where I developed my independence and made friends from all over the world. It paved the way for my career, and I feel as though I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

Toronto is Louie’s hometown, but she chose to attend McGill because “it was the best. McGill is always ranked as the top university in Canada, and I wanted to get the best education and the best experience that I could.”

That experience wouldn’t have been possible on her own. Louie was the recipient of McGill student scholarships and bursaries, and she has never forgotten the deep impact they’ve had on her life. “The financial support I received helped me tremendously. I am so grateful to have been given the chance to come here and receive a McGill education, because I consider it the greatest gift.”

It’s a gift that she wants to share with others.

Louie’s experience has inspired her to give back generously. After many years of donating to The McGill Fund, she recently notified the University that she and her husband have left a bequest in their will to support McGill student scholarships and financial aid.

“This is something that I wanted to do because of how grateful I am,” she explains. “I feel so privileged to have been here, and I want other students to have the same opportunities I did. This is my way of giving back, and I encourage others to do the same.”
