On her way to making her mark in Indigenous dental care

McCall MacBain Scholar Janelle Brown-Walkus entered the  Canada Doctor of Dental Medicine program with the goal of helping to improve dental care for Indigenous peoples across Canada

The first thing that drew Janelle Brown-Walkus, BSc’18, to study at McGill was the mobile dental clinics at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, part of its award-winning Service to the Community Program.

Working in community is important to the McCall MacBain Scholar from Maple Ridge, B.C. and the Squamish, Heiltsuk, and Gwa'sala First Nations. She entered the Doctor of Dental Medicine program in 2022 with the goal of helping to improve dental care for Indigenous peoples across Canada.

During her time at McGill, she has actively helped other Indigenous students on their academic path, including serving as a mentor and helping run a campus group for Indigenous students in STEM.

Now in her final year of the DMD program, Brown-Walkus spoke to us recently about her career aspirations.
