On my first visit to Montreal, I fell in love with the city. I was amazed by its energy – a diverse, cosmopolitan metropolis that was so alive. When I toured McGill’s downtown campus, everyone I encountered seemed passionate about challenging themselves and each other to be their best. Then and there, I had my heart set on studying at McGill.
I remember when computers with web browsers showed up in the library. Despite their very slow internet connections, I was transfixed.”
My political science courses opened my eyes to how the world was evolving, and to the role that business and technology play in the context of a broader society. McGill instilled a strong work ethic and helped shape my values and worldview. It exposed me to diverse ideas and perspectives, and made me more globally minded.
Although I did not study business at McGill, I was always oriented toward entrepreneurship. McGill ignited my passion for creating, and exposed me to the early development of the internet. During an introduction to computer science course, one of the assignments was to send an email – the first that I and my classmates had ever sent. I remember when computers with web browsers showed up in the library. Despite their very slow internet connections, I was transfixed. I sensed that this technology would have a transformative impact on business and society, and I knew that I wanted to build my career in this area.
Following McGill, I attended business school at Columbia University. When I graduated in 2004, there were very few resources and support mechanisms for those interested in entrepreneurship. Most people wanted to go work for consulting or finance firms.
Since then there has been a huge shift in this area, and today’s students get an enormous amount of support. They are mentored by alumni, receive funding, and have access to co-working spaces. These are wonderful things for young aspiring entrepreneurs. For current McGill students interested in pursuing entrepreneurship, I encourage you to take advantage of all the support that your university has to offer. These resources will help to accelerate your efforts.
Throughout my career, I have benefited from fantastic mentors. These relationships have had a life-changing impact. I believe in paying it forward and take tremendous satisfaction in mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs, particularly those who may not have had the same opportunities I had.
McGill provided me with the most incredible four-year experience. It was there that some of my most enduring relationships were forged. McGill has had a tremendous impact on my life and on my career. I will always be grateful.
