McGill-born idea revolutionizes how we experience sound

When brothers Robert-Eric Gaskell, MMus’06, PhD’16, and Peter Gaskell, MEng’09, PhD’17, were completing their research at McGill inspiration struck: using graphene – a material whose high stiffness could reduce sound distortion and whose lightness could optimize efficiency – to design the perfect loudspeaker. Support from McGill – including guidance from Professor Thomas Szkopek, who gave the brothers advice and access to facilities, along with support from the Office of Intellectual Property, and a $7,000 donor-funded Innovation Award from the Faculty of Engineering – helped the brothers transform their idea into a product that could transform the way we hear sound.
