Why I’m supporting the 200 for 200 Legacy Challenge

Antonia Yeung of Hong Kong says her McGill connection “is a long-distance relationship I am not willing to give up.”

They say ‘home is where the heart is’, and a piece of my heart will always be with McGill.

Every alum has their way of celebrating McGill: participating in alumni events, volunteering for our alma mater, or wearing a McGill hoodie with pride. I have chosen to leave a legacy gift to McGill, and it’s the best decision I’ve made.

My experience at McGill was transformational. As an international student – who’d never been to Canada, let alone Montreal – I expected an exceptionally steep learning curve. But McGill offered an inclusive environment, with staff and students from all walks of life. Everyone I met was friendly, patient and helpful. The more I came to know, the more I realized that’s just how McGillians are: the best versions of themselves, day in and day out.

The warmth of the campus community – and my home department of Linguistics in particular – had a positive impact on my life. And despite the distance, McGill’s alumni office in Asia has been active in strengthening campus ties. I attribute all that I have achieved to my McGill education; I would like to play a small part in contributing to McGill’s future, so that more students can experience the same journey I did.

In these turbulent times, a legacy gift is a smart decision. You’re making a commitment that doesn’t require fulfillment up front, and that you can honour in the long run. You can define your legacy now, as opposed to having someone else define it for you.

To know that I can be a part of the long-term development of McGill after my own journey concluded is most satisfying. I feel that a legacy gift is the least I can do for all I’ve gained from the institution.

McGillians in Asia interested in learning more about legacy giving are welcome to contact Alvin Chung at the McGill University Asia Office.
