Your support is essential in helping the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences reshape teaching, research and health care, to take on the biggest health challenges and to defeat them.

The McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has been at the forefront of myriad discoveries throughout its history. The introduction of bedside teaching; we were there. The founding of “stress” research; we were there. The discovery of stem cells; we were there. The elucidation of the brain; we were there. The harnessing of antiretroviral 3TC to treat HIV; we were there. The mapping of the human genome; we were there.

With accomplished graduates that include Nobel Prize winners and astronauts, pioneers in oncology, stem cells,

neuroscience and nursing, the Faculty is preparing future graduates to meet health challenges by collaborating across professions, disciplines, countries and continents. Our research strengths — from cancer and infectious diseases to population health and genomic medicine — enable us to target the biggest problems and to train the best to resolve them.

Today, the world faces challenges and opportunities as monumental as those that shaped public health in the last century. Once again, we are ready to lead.

Discover our vision for the future

McGill Faculty of Medicine Training future-ready health professionals and scientists

Training future-ready health professionals and scientists

At the heart of the Faculty’s mission is training the next generation of expert health professionals and scientists to excel in health care, discovery and policy.

With your support we will transform teaching, learning and the student experience through new scholarships, fellowships and awards, innovative learning programs, and student wellness initiatives. We will create a new Centre for Interprofessional Health Education, modernized classrooms and laboratories, along with Chairs and Professorships in Digital Health.

We will also revitalize and create new spaces in a phased approach as follows:

  • Phase 1: Refurbish the McIntyre Medical Sciences Building
  • Phase 2: Integrate multiple biomedical departments into a modern centrally-located learning hub that will serve as a living laboratory for new models of discovery, teaching and innovation

And we will champion education excellence through the new McGill Institute of Health Sciences Education.

Breaking down walls to discover and innovate

McGill is home to leading basic science and clinical researchers targeting some of our biggest health challenges. And they are passionate about defeating them. Here's how:

Building on the strengths of the Goodman Cancer Research Centre and their vision to "collaborate to cure", we are ready to lead the next wave of cancer discoveries and new precision cancer therapies by uniting behind a single, bold McGill Cancer vision. We will:

  • Build a leading collaborative, interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial research ecosystem with a new McGill Cancer Institute, which would empower us to recruit and train future cancer leaders from multiple disciplines, and offer leading graduate programs and degrees
  • Develop innovative technologies for early detection and treatment
  • Enhance patient-centric research to better understand cancer initiation, resistance and metastases
  • Improve precision medicine strategies and quality of life for patients
  • Build and partner in global networks targeting the deadliest cancers
  • Enhance big-data expertise and cutting-edge technology platforms

McGill Faculty of Medicine Leading in health sciences innovation

Leading in health sciences innovation

We will pioneer medicine for the post-antiobiotic world by enabling the McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4) to recruit research talent, support major interdisciplinary research and build discovery platforms in genomics, imaging, AI and big data.

We will create a powerhouse in genomic data under the leadership of our Canada Excellence Research Chair in Genomic Medicine to harness the genome to better predict drug responses, build an infrastructure to support hospital-based genomics research and improve clinical care through genomics-enabled medicine.

And we will launch the new McGill Initiative in Computational Medicine (MiCM), attracting international experts in computational medicine and top research personnel, providing fellowships to graduate students, and supporting collaborations at the intersection of big data and health.

New frontiers and cures

Our goal is cure diseases from within through the McGill Regenerative Medicine Network. We will build cutting-edge infrastructure, recruit top talent, create graduate training programs, and forge research partnerships.

Open new frontiers at the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics and Mental Health by harnessing breakthroughs in genetics, brain imaging, neuroinformatics and epigenetics, recruiting more top brain scientists and funding cross-disciplinary partnerships.

We will drive innovation across the McGill Health Network; expanding the McGill Clinical Innovation Competition, launching new innovation prizes and seed funding, establishing an international Clinical Innovation Conference, expanding programming at the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning, and forging new partnerships with the Desautels Faculty of Management.

Helping to heal communities locally and globally

Global and public health challenges demand a breadth of vision and a multiplicity of partners. With your support we will:

Launch the School of Population and Global Health vision and strategy: The School brings together more than 200 projects and partnerships in 50 countries. We will attract additional top research talent, create new cross-disciplinary training programs and infrastructure to ramp up collaborative research, and expand local, national and international partnerships.

Revitalize our aging populations by building on the strong geriatrics program and work at the McGill Research Centre for Studies in Aging: We will recruit more experts in aging, build outreach programs for the elderly and create innovative research partnerships.

Collaborate with Indigenous communities to help improve access to culturally safe health care by expanding the McGill Indigenous Health Professions Program, building new partnerships with Indigenous health organizations, and integrating Indigenous health into undergraduate and graduate nurse training.

Heal the crisis in youth mental health – the number one issue facing young people – by creating a Centre of Youth Mental Health and Innovation: We will recruit global experts, launch collaborative research projects and implement discoveries through community partnerships.
