Patricia Faison Hewlin, Associate Professor, Organizational Behaviour in the Desautels Faculty of Management; Ombudsperson for Students at McGill

Over my 12 years at McGill I have avidly contributed to the community with workshops, keynote speaking, and as a moderator on topics from my research expertise in organizational behaviour.

When I left my banking career to enter academia, I not only wanted to conduct research that pushed forward scholarly thought on organizational behaviour, but I also wanted to stay close to the field so that my research would offer solutions to complex problems related to leading organizations and building workplaces where employees can thrive.

With my volunteer work at and beyond McGill, I aim to create a bridge between organizational behaviour research and practice in a wide range of areas, among people from many walks in life. It is rewarding to share my research findings to help people understand how to become more authentic, and how to use their influence to create pathways for others to thrive, whether at work or home.

I appreciate the consistently strong research environment at McGill and the calibre of students. I’ve found McGill students to be curious and open to different perspectives related to leading change, ethics, diversity, equity and inclusion. I remain excited to prepare students for leadership in their future careers.

Since coming to McGill I’ve been able to do my research internationally, particularly in Asia, where I conducted interviews with leaders, many of whom were alumni. This international work broadened my perspective with respect to the impact of cultural values on how people define and engage in leadership and authenticity. It also resulted in many collaborations, including a visiting position at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China.
