I grew up after WWII amidst family and friends who had returned from the war determined to support the community. Volunteerism was important. With my museum history and military background, I found myself supporting causes that were generally waning with time and where I could use my organizational and leadership talents effectively. This gave me a great sense of satisfaction and pride.
Passing on my experience and talents to young people is a special thread of my life. I have taught bagpipes to young people for 50 years. When visiting McGill, I get a special satisfaction in meeting students and learning of the amazing research they are undertaking. Oh, to be young again!
In my role as Executive Director of the Macdonald Stewart Foundation, I am responsible for the legacy to the University of Sir William Christopher Macdonald and the Stewart Family. Since the passing of Liliane Stewart six years ago, I have taken on the duties of representing the Foundation at McGill events such as Founders’ Day at Macdonald Campus, convocations, Honours and Awards ceremonies, and more. Having been a museum director for more than 30 years and having negotiated the merger of the Stewart Museum with the McCord Museum, I have a special interest in the ongoing relationship with McGill.
I take great pride in passing on to young people why history is an important aspect of what we are today, and how it is a guide for the future.
