Dear members of the McGill community,
As the University works to safeguard the health and wellness of our students, we are also hearing from members of our global McGill alumni community who are asking how they can support students in this difficult time.
I am deeply moved to hear these expressions of heartfelt concern for our students. The rapid changes taking place to control the escalation of COVID-19 are putting a financial burden on them, and lower income students are especially vulnerable. Some students have lost part-time earnings and need help with basic living expenses. Some are trying to get home or return from internship and research locations or to pay for technical needs related to online learning.
Responding to this community outreach, we have put in place the McGill Student Emergency Support Fund. This fund will support a Student Emergency Bursary to help McGill students with unforeseen expenses they are facing right now. The bursaries are available immediately and emergency funds are already helping students. The University has also allocated substantial support for this emergency fund, but the need for bursaries has reached an unprecedented level.
I do understand that many people are themselves experiencing financial difficulties and may not be able to help at this time. If you are in a position to support student relief, you can do so now by giving here. You can make a difference today with a gift of any amount. I can assure you that your support will be deeply appreciated by all of us at McGill, and especially by our students.
